Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla – 2017

A few weeks ago Tricia and I took some much-needed time away from work and traveled to Mexico for the second time in as many years. We love the people, the weather, and the all-inclusive! And let’s remember that it’s a three-hour direct flight to and from Chicago.

Last year we stayed at the elegant El Dorado Royale in Puerto Morelos. It was fantastic: great service, food and private. But we wanted something different this time around, and we’d heard so many great things about Playa del Carmen and it’s growth, and its bustling 5th Avenue, that we had to give it a chance. Tricia did some research and found Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla.

To put it simply, we didn’t want to leave on our sixth and final day. A private pool, personal butler and being only a 20 minute walk into town are a few of the things we miss today yet look forward to again in 2018. Read on for a recap and some of our favorite photos from the trip.

Day One

  • Bloody’s and coffees at 6am (Chicago O’Hare)
  • Smooth flight
    • We opted for seats in the row behind first class so we could get off the plane and through customs more quickly
  • Hopped in a private car (vs public shuttle) to our hotel
    • 40 minute ride
    • Paid for the car to and from the hotel up front
  • When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff and handed a cool towel to wipe our faces
  • After we checked in we met Hector, our personal butler for the duration of the trip
    • He gave us a tour of our wing, room, amenities, services, private areas and an overview of the grounds as a whole
    • We were given a cell phone that would keep us connected to him throughout the trip!
  • We spent the afternoon at the pool and cleaned up, then headed to Red Lounge for chocolate martinis. They were fantastic!
  • At the South Bar before dinner we made a new a friend, Katherine, from Manhattan. We grabbed a drink together and had dinner at The Grill. Steaks!

Day Two

  • Tricia and I woke up around 6:30am and hit the gym for treadmill time. After, we had a nice breakfast on our terrace, delivered by room service.
  • Pool time! Lots of SPF 30; enjoyed some great guacamole.
  • Hector met us at the pool and asked about our first night. He’d check in with us each and every day, sometimes multiple times. He made our trip exceptional!
  • For dinner we went to Vento.
    • I had steamed fish and Tricia had chicken
    • We shared a Lamb block (this was delicious)
  • We met Kate for a nightcap

Day Three

  • We woke up bright and early again, and headed to the gym
  • … more pool time!
  • Enjoyed lunch with Katherine at La Palapa – more great guacamole, some alfredo.
  • For dinner, the three of us went to Bana for sushi. Another delicious meal – the general manager even stopped by to make sure we were enjoying the meal.
    • Our service received here and everywhere throughout grounds was fantastic
  • After dinner we grabbed a night-cap at the Beach Bar before Tricia and I headed back to the room … to order a pizza!

Day Four

  • Spa day, at YHI (pronounced “gee”)
    • Wonderful amenities
      • Both a hot and cold Jacuzzi for water therapy, and a wading pool
      • Steam and sauna
      • Day beds
  • Buffet for lunch!
  • After cleaning up Tricia and I walked along the beach to Playa del Carmen
    • I didn’t know what to expect regarding the walk. If you don’t either, plan to work!
  • 5th Avenue made the walk worth the wait – check out the pictures for some of our favorite moments

Day Five

  • Last time for pool time (considering we’d be leaving day six)
  • Breakfast buffet – tasty eggs, bloody mary’s and mimosas
  • We loved the city so much when we went the day before that we went again on this night. Again we walked, but this time we walked on the street – much less work.

Day Six

  • Our last day
  • Packing, easy checkout and our bittersweet goodbye with Hector
    • We weren’t ready to return to reality!
  • Our car picked us up at the previously scheduled time and took us to the airport, where we had a Johnny Rocket’s burger and some fries. Our last unhealthy meal before post-vacation detox. Or so we thought.
    • After we made it home and dropped off our bags, we were famished. The only thing that would satiate us was a pizza from Pizano’s, which is right next door to our building in the South Loop. Back to reality on day seven (a day that I’d taken off of work, proactively!).

If excursions aren’t for you and what you’re looking for is relaxation in the lap of luxury, I highly recommend staying at this hotel and touring the city. If you have any questions about the hotel or costs, please feel free to reach me via my contact form. I’d be happy to put you in touch with the A-team who took care of us and share any Playa del Carmen “must hit spots”!
